FAQs

How long does an ad last at OnlyTrailers?

At OnlyTrailers.com.au, your ads remain up until your vehicle sells. You only pay once to start selling, without needing to renew or extend your listing.

How many photographs should I include when selling my trailer online?

You want to include as many photos as possible to give your trailer the best chance of selling quickly. We recommend 20 or more. Ensure your photos show the exterior from at least 4 angles (front, back and both sides) and the interior (where relevant), as well as any connection points, cables, gates, chains, tyres, etc.

You will also need to include photos of any minor (scratches and paint chips) and major (rust, damaged connections etc) damage on the trailer. And of course, make sure your photos are well-lit and in focus - people are less likely to buy a trailer online that they can't see properly.

What's the best way to write descriptions?

As with anything you're selling, the more information you can give the better. But don't just list the specs and features, tell a story via a detailed and honest description! Selling a trailer online is about creating a connection with a potential buyer. Talk about what this trailer has done for you and, most importantly, what it will do for them.

For example, if you're selling a freight trailer, talk about how it can help their business; if you're selling a single-axle trailer, talk about how it will make it easier to do jobs around the property. Talk to your buyer and help them picture what their life will look like with your trailer.

How do I value my trailer?

The best way to value your trailer is to compare it to other listings of the same make and model. Try to find listings of a similar condition and age to your trailer, and use those details to determine the value of your trailer.

How do I spot a scam or fraud sale?

There are a number of ways to spot a fraudulent or scam sale as a seller. Trailer buyers who offer to buy immediately without inspection or offer over your listing price are likely to be fraudulent. Additionally, buyers who refuse to provide contact details or speak on the phone are best avoided.

There has also been a rise in fraudulent buyers offering to pay using PayID. Although they may promise that it is a safe and secure method of payment, avoid dealing with these buyers at all costs and report them where possible.

Finally, always remember to trust your gut: if an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.

How do I receive leads?

Interested prospective buyers will contact you directly through the 'Enquire Now' button on your listing, and you can then choose to continue your conversation with potential trailer buyers through email, phone or SMS.

Can I contact trailer sellers?

Yes, you can. OnlyTrailers.com.au makes contacting sellers quickly and securely easy with the 'Enquire Now' button on every listing.

What is the best practice for buying and selling privately and safely?

The best way to buy and sell your vehicle safely is to ensure that you are dealing with a real person. Trust your gut when it comes to communicating with trailer buyers/sellers, and remember that you are under no obligation to continue contact with the individual if you don't want to.

If you have suspicions about a buyer or seller, email hello@onlytrailers.com.au and provide us with some details so we can properly review your concerns.

Can I sell a trailer that is under finance?

No, you cannot sell a trailer under finance as this is illegal and is known as an 'encumbered' trailer. This is because the loan is attached to the trailer and not the buyer. While the buyer is technically responsible for repaying the vehicle's debt, the trailer is considered collateral for the loan, causing any outstanding debt to apply to the physical vehicle.

Do I need a Motor Dealer licence to sell my trailer?

Generally, you do not need a Motor Dealer Licence to sell a private vehicle, although you may be required to get one if you sell multiple vehicles within a year. Every state limits how many trucks, cars, caravans etc you can sell before needing a Motor Dealer Licence, so be sure to check your state's regulations if you plan on selling multiple vehicles.

Does my trailer need a roadworthy certificate to be sold?

Whether or not you need a roadworthiness certificate will depend on your state. Check your state's requirements for selling, and obtain a roadworthiness certificate prior to listing your trailer online if one is required.

Can I sell my trailer without registration?

As with a roadworthiness certificate, the regulations around this differ from state to state. Be sure to check your state's requirements before listing your trailer to avoid any issues for yourself or the buyer.
